The leg press

The Leg Press Make it Worse:

The leg press feels safe.

That's exactly what makes it dangerous for most men over 40.

Here's what's actually happening.

Most guys spend most of their days seated.

As a result, the front of their bodies tightens up.

Hip flexors. Quads. The whole anterior chain.

That tightness costs them hip mobility - specifically hip extension. The ability to move the leg behind the body when walking.

Then they hop into the leg press.

Seated.

And tighten up the front of their legs again.

Their hips never move into full extension.

The machine reinforces the exact pattern that's already causing problems.

But here's where it gets worse.

Guys routinely try to get more range of motion by letting their hips roll up off the back of the seat - which rounds their lower backs under load.

And one of the best ways to blow out your lower back is rounding it under load.

The leg press isn't building a better body for most men over 40.

It's providing a false sense of safety while quietly reinforcing the dysfunctional patterns that drove them to the machine in the first place.

I haven't recommended the leg press to any man who isn't specifically bodybuilding in at least 25 years.

That's how little regard I have for it.
